Delete your ClipSpan account
A ClipSpan account is optional. It adds cloud sync and an encrypted backup of your clipboard history. Local history and QR pairing work without one. This page explains how to delete your account, what ClipSpan stores for it, and what is kept afterward.
It covers accounts on ClipSpan's own servers. If you signed in to a self-hosted server, its operator holds that data.
Option 1: Delete it in the app
- Open ClipSpan and go to Account. On Android, tap Account on the main screen. On Windows and Linux, open the Account tab.
- Select Delete account. On Windows and Linux it is under Danger zone.
- Type your account email to confirm, then select Delete account.
If you can't sign in, or the app can't reach ClipSpan's server, the app links back to this page.
Option 2: Ask us by email
Use this if you can't sign in, for example because you forgot your password or lost your device, or if you no longer have the app.
- Email contact@clipspan.com from the address you sign in to ClipSpan with, with the subject "Delete my ClipSpan account". Don't include your password.
- We reply to that address and ask you to confirm before doing anything.
- Once you confirm, we delete the account within 7 days. It is then erased on the same schedule as deleting it in the app.
What is deleted, and when
Deleting the account signs out every device immediately. You can't restore a deleted account.
| Data | Deleted |
|---|---|
| Sign-in sessions on all your devices | Ended immediately. Session records are erased after 7 days. |
| Clips and images waiting on the relay for delivery to another device | Immediately. If the relay can't be reached at that moment, ClipSpan keeps retrying, and undelivered items expire on their own after 72 hours. |
| Account email and sign-in key hash | After 7 days. Until then the account can't be used and the email address can't be registered again. |
| Device list (names, platforms, public encryption keys) | After 7 days |
| Encrypted vault backup and its attachments | After 7 days |
| Synced settings | After 7 days |
| Pending "Delete forever" requests | After 7 days |
What is kept
- Bug reports and suggestions you sent from the app are stored separately, as private GitHub issues. They can include your account ID and device ID along with what you wrote. Deleting the account doesn't remove them. Ask in your email and we'll delete them too.
- Keyboard word contributions are anonymous and never linked to your account. You can delete a pending contribution for 30 days after sending it. After that, only anonymous word counts are kept.
- Backups. Encrypted database backups keep their copy of your account until they rotate out, up to 30 days after deletion.
- Server logs can include your email address, for example after a failed sign-in. They are kept for up to 30 days.
Data on your devices
Deleting the account doesn't touch what is stored on your phone or computer. Clipboard history, pinned items, and pairings stay on each device. To remove them, clear history in ClipSpan's settings or uninstall the app.
What ClipSpan stores for an account
This is everything ClipSpan's account server and relay hold. Your password never leaves your device, and clipboard history is encrypted on your device before upload.
| Data | Details |
|---|---|
| Account | Email, a hash of the sign-in key your device derives from your password, created and updated dates, and synced settings |
| Devices | Name, platform, public encryption key, Wi-Fi sync key fingerprint (computers only), when it was added and last seen, and whether it is active or revoked |
| Sessions | Hashed sign-in tokens, their expiry, and whether the device is trusted |
| Vault backup | Your history and attachments, end-to-end encrypted, with their size and last update |
| "Delete forever" requests | IDs and hashes of clips you deleted forever, until each of your devices confirms |
| Relay | Encrypted clips and images waiting for delivery to another device. Undelivered items expire after 72 hours and are removed within about 10 minutes of expiring. |
Get a copy of your data
Email contact@clipspan.com from your account address. We reply to confirm the request first, then send what the server stores for your account:
- Your account ID, email, and created and updated dates
- Your synced settings
- Each device's name, platform, and status, and when it was added and last seen
- How many sessions are active
- Your vault backup's size, when it was last updated, and its number of attachments
- The number of pending "Delete forever" requests
The vault backup is end-to-end encrypted, so ClipSpan can't read it or include its contents.
Tester signup list
Signing up to test on this site doesn't create a ClipSpan account. To be removed from the list, email contact@clipspan.com.
See the privacy policy for how ClipSpan handles data overall.
